Children's Day: "Ombudsman's Corner" in the City Park

The Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its establishment, was among the successful participants of the Children's Day Weekend, organized by the Municipality of Budapest and the International Children's Safety Service, in the capital's City Park. During the two-day event, hundreds of children and adults visited the "Ombudsman's Corner" in the Safe Internet Tent: the older kids and their parents, individually or together, could take a fundamental and children's rights quiz, testing their knowledge regarding the enforcement of the rights of the child, the prevention of violence against children, and safe web surfing. Meanwhile, with the help of our staff members, the smaller ones could make "Ombudsgoblin" and "Rights Fairy" dolls from wooden spoons and draw in coloring books formulating fundamental rights messages. The kids could also send messages to the Ombudsman using the Message Board. The messages focused on the school: Let everyone be equal! No more boring required readings! There were kids who asked for the reduction of school violence, high-quality education or just a lot of toys, while others were wishing for learning things that would be useful in real life as well. Many of them informed the Ombudsman of their wish that hospitals and patients should be given more attention, or suggested more thorough medical examinations.
