null Commissioner for Fundamental Rights Gives Talk at International Ombudsman Conference Entitled "Ensuring Human Rights and Freedoms as the Highest Value and an Important Criterion of the Reforms Carried out in the Country"

Dr. Ákos Kozma held a presentation on the ombudsman’s role in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities at the conference organised by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Uzbek ombudsman institution on 23 February 2022.

In his speech, the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights highlighted the following: “It is one of the key goals of the Ombudsman, besides and beyond conducting investigations, to draw the attention of the public to the situation of persons with disabilities. The Ombudsman contributes to the enforcement of the rights of persons with disabilities, the availability of equal rights and equal opportunities, and in consequence of these, the resolving of individual complaints, by bringing up problems related to general fundamental rights and outlining the possible solutions.” In his talk, Dr. Ákos Kozma also called attention to the fact that “these rights, which are seemingly abstract, should be transformed into active state action: persons with disabilities should be supported by tailor-made measures, a supportive environment should be created for them, so that they could exercise their fundamental rights as fully as possible, both in their private and public spheres. As an Ombudsman, I am striving to promote all this with my concluded and ongoing inquiries, as well as with my public messages.”

The representatives of OSCE and the heads of a high number of national ombudsman institutions also participated in the international event.
