Film and roundtable discussion on children’s rights at the Ombudsman’s Office

There are emotions, the need to be loved and accepted on the one hand. We can see the effects of comments in the social media, the pressure to conform to the group, the expectations to do drugs and have sex on the other hand. This is what the teenage students of a Zurich high school are confronted with. The seemingly unresolvable inward conflicts of these students, threatening a tragedy, are shown in the Swiss movie entitled Amateur Teens, which was granted the Audience Award at the Zurich Film Festival.

The staff of the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, as well as some children’s rights experts and activists watched the movie in the company of the Swiss Ambassador Mr. Peter Burkhard on April 12, 2017. After the film, Ms. Mária Herczog, Program Director of the Family, Child, Youth Association facilitated a discussion with children’s rights experts on the issues brought up by the movie, the possible solutions and the related school program. The topics touched upon included verbal and physical abuse at school, the possible ways to raise awareness of and enforce children’s rights, the current situation in Hungary, as well as the programs to be implemented (such as KIVA, ENABLE).
