On February 20, 2018, the Ombudsman for Future Generations, together with EMLA (Environmental Management and Law Association), organized a workshop on the question of the right to access to justice in environmental matters.

EMLA*, which is a non-profit organization involved in domestic and international issues of environmental law and environmental management, in its capacity as a member of the Justice and Environment (J&E) network, which encompasses as many as 11 EU member states, is coordinating an EU-funded LIFE project in the period of 2017-2020. The project focuses on the development of the right to access to justice in environmental matters in 8 EU member states (Austria, Estonia, France, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Spain and Slovakia). To this aim, EMLA is planning to organize six workshops in Hungary between 2018 and 2020, the first one of which took place in the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights on February 20, 2018.

Nearly 50 experts attended this event, representing the competent ministries, the environmental authorities, as well as some of the judiciary and non-governmental organizations. The attendees discussed the legislative and legal practice aspects of the issue, as well as the difficulties and the opportunities related to the right to access to justice in the recently reformed institutional and legal framework.

*The main activities of EMLA include legal counsel and legal representation on environmental issues of public interest, environmental law research, providing expert opinions and education, as well as the implementation of environmental management projects. EMLA is a founding member of Justice and Environment, The Access Initiative and it is a member of the European Environmental Bureau and Nuclear Transparency Watch. EMLA Foundation, which was established by the Association, is involved in environmental education.
