March 26 – Award ceremony and exhibition - national drawing contest, contest on ethnology and photo competition for national minorities at the Ombudsman’s Office

The academic year 2018/2019 saw the third announcement by the National Minority Educational Center of the Educational Authority of a national drawing contest for children and pupils who participate in national minority education and also, the first announcement of a national minority photo contest. The contests are aimed at presenting the history, geography, culture, folk traditions, local customs of the national minorities living in Hungary by using the tools of fine arts and photography, as well as at developing the creativity of the pupils of national minorities.

The Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights was glad to host the award ceremony and the opening of the exhibition displaying the best art works. In her opening speech, as the patron of the event, Deputy Commissioner for the Rights of National Minorities Dr. Elisabeth Sándor-Szalay mentioned, among others, that the mother tongues, traditions and cultures of our diverse national minority communities may survive through the young generation. The key to preserving the identity of national minorities is that the children get acquainted with these at as early an age as possible, and it is not only the family and the immediate environment of the children but also, the educational institutions that play an outstanding role in this. It is partly because of this that Dr. Elisabeth Sándor-Szalay, in her capacity as the Deputy Commissioner for the Rights of National Minorities, pays special attention to the situation of national minority education.

The award-winning art works will be displayed at the Korczak Hall of the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights on weekdays between 8.00 a.m. and 16.30 p.m. until April 30, 2019.
