May 29, 2018: The Deputy Commissioner for Future Generations announced a 3-round national competition entitled e-Figyelő for 14-19-year-old secondary school students in joint efforts with the professional partner of the Association ‘Towards Sustainability’, i.e. the Association of Hungarian Nature Defenders, which is the Hungarian branch of Friends of the Earth. The competition was on from February 12 to the end of May, 2018. Although the generation of secondary school students that was addressed in the program uses electronic devices on a daily basis, they have little information on the background of these gadgets. These devices, for instance mobile phones, tablets and laptops have considerable global, environmental and social effects. The competition drew attention to the problems occurring during the life cycle of these appliances, including environmental impacts, the health, social and welfare concerns of those who work in factories, as well as the challenges posed by waste and recycling. Through this, the children had the opportunity to better understand the functioning of the world, the roots and drivers of the problems, and what they can do as responsible consumers and users. The ten teams that reached the finals of the competition may win valuable prizes, while the first three teams may win a class excursion.
