Visit by the Geneva UNICEF delegation

On March 7, 2018, the executive staff of the UNICEF Hungary Committee and the delegation of UNICEF’s Geneva-based headquarters paid a visit to our office. The Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, the Secretary General of the Office, as well as the legal experts of the Department for Equal Opportunities and Children’s Rights participated in this meeting. The main topics of the meeting included trafficking in children, child prostitution and international child abduction, as well as the respective reports prepared by the legal experts of our office. Based on the experience gained from the inquiries conducted to date, the children’s rights experts outlined the potential methods of prevention and described the best practices that have been applied. These included the rights awareness program carried out at the Rákospalota Correctional Institution for Girls, the child-friendly interrogation rooms introduced in the context of the Barnahus Program, the efforts taken by the Névtelen Utak (Anonymous Ways) Foundation for the rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking, the exhibition entitled “How Much Are You Worth?”, as well as the participation of the affected children in these programs and initiatives. The members of the Geneva delegation asked questions about the opportunities of children for filing complaints, the similar problems affecting foreign national children living in Hungary, and they also received information on the children’s rights homepage that is being developed as part of the homepage of our office, as well as the presence of our institution at the annually organized events at Gyermeksziget (Children’s Island) and the Children’s Day in Városliget (the Budapest City Park). The parties are looking forward to further cooperation.
