Visit of the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union is going to recommend to the members of the organization to follow the example of the Hungarian Ombudsman's Office and establish an institution mandated to protect the interests of future generations. Saber Hossain Chowdhury voiced his intention upon concluding his consultations with Deputy-Commissioner Marcel Szabó in the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights. The President of the IPU inquired about the activities of the Ombudsman for Future Generations in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable development, as well as about his competence and solutions, the operation of his office. Saber Hossain Chowdhury intends to request detailed information from the Deputy-Commissioner responsible for the protection of the interests of future generations on the Hungarian data and facts providing background to his initiative.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is the only global organization of the parliaments of sovereign nation states, providing a forum for dialog and exchange of views. Ever since its establishment in Paris back in 1889, the IPU's main task has been to develop parliamentarianism and parliamentary institutions, thus promoting and strengthening democracy all over the world. The IPU expresses its opinions on issues that can be solved through parliamentary action. In addition to political and security problems, the organization also tackles the issues of human rights, environmental protection, as well as regional, demographic and health issues.

Hungary is a founding member of this international organization.
