Visit of European judges at the Office of the Hungarian Ombudsman

The judges from different countries of the European Union who came to Hungary as part of a visit organized by the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN) received information on the responsibilities and competence of the Ombudsman, as well as the position of the institution in the Hungarian system of public law at the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights. In the introductory presentation, they were informed on the formation and evolution of the institution of the Ombudsman in Hungary, on the main types of cases that the Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioners deal with, as well as the organization of the Ombudsman’s institution and its international relations.

It is the mission of EJTN to promote the development of a common European legal and judicial culture. The Network considers it as its responsibility to promote the development of a genuine European judicial area, to disseminate the knowledge on the legal systems within the European Union, and through these, to deepen the cooperation between the judges and prosecutors working in the EU member states. The judges specializing in civil, criminal and administrative law study the Hungarian legal system and justice, and this recent visit at the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights was a part of this program this year too. The meetings organized in Hungary in the framework of this program, which is also known as the short-term exchange of judges, are coordinated by the Hungarian Academy of Justice.
