Visit of the OSCE delegation at our Office

On March 20, Douglas Wake and Meaghan Fitzgerald, i.e. the senior staff members of the Limited Election Observation Mission to Hungary at OSCE’s (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) paid a visit to our office. ODIHR officially opened its Limited Election Observation Mission to Hungary on March 6, with a view to monitoring the parliamentary elections that are to take place on April 8. As part of their program in Hungary, they also met with the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights. After the introduction of the parties, the head of the delegation Douglas Wake briefly explained the key activities of the Mission and asked the Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioners to what extent and in what way the Ombudsman may affect the Hungarian election process. The Commissioner gave a detailed description of the space of maneuver that the Ombudsman’s institution has in this respect and the very low number of complaints filed to the Office on this subject at the time of the last election. The members of the delegation asked several questions about the methods of voting available to the Hungarian citizens living abroad, as well as the election rules for the national minorities living in Hungary. The Deputy Commissioner for the Rights of National Minorities gave a detailed explanation of the preferential mandates for national minorities, the system of setting up national lists, as well as the current election situation of the Roma and German minorities living in Hungary.
