Round table discussion concerning the enforcement of the fundamental rights of transgender persons

On October 25, 2017, the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights hosted a workshop on the enforcement of the fundamental rights of transgender persons. The purpose of the forum jointly organized with the Transvanilla Association was to create an opportunity for the discussion of the human rights dilemmas affecting transgender people in a professional dialog. Also, it was our aim to put the Hungarian and foreign experts dealing with various aspects of the issue in touch with each other, thus contributing to the development and shaping of legal regulation and practices.

In the first session of the roundtable discussion, the international and Hungarian constitutional standards related to the legal recognition of gender, as well as sex and name changes in the legal sense of the word were reviewed. In the second session, the medical and human rights approaches to the endeavors for the depathologization of transgender identities were discussed in detail.
