Should the next generation pay?

  • conference at the Ombudsman’s Office on a more efficient enforcement of environmental liability

In the opening presentation of the conference held on November 8, 2017, Deputy Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, Ombudsman for Future Generations Gyula Bándi explained the issues brought up by the proposed legislative initiative aimed at the more efficient enforcement of environmental liability. In his talk, he touched upon the obligation to provide environmental safeguards, the protection of the interests of generations in the liquidation proceedings, as well as increasing the budgetary resources available for damage compensations, as these should all act in conjunction, as part of a diversified system. Focus should be placed on the enforcement of the principles of precaution and prevention and the financial conditions should be ensured for preventing that the compensation for environmental pollution is protracted, this should be done right after the pollution takes place, said Gyula Bándi. In his talk, the Deputy Commissioner indicated that a stable system of public administration, which can represent the interests of environmental protection, is vital. Then the ideas were discussed in two groups, in which comments on the topic were made by civil society organizations, government and economic players, the representatives of public prosecutor’s offices and policy-makers. They were invited to the conference because it is imperative that the proposal now being drafted by the Deputy Commissioner respond as well as possible to the points that are deemed important by the affected parties.

Greenpeace Hungary Association took part in the organization of the conference and they presented the second volume of their series of publications entitled Mérgezett Örökségünk (Our Poisoned Heritage).
